Mississippi bonus tax calculator

Your normal salary or wages for the year, before tax

A ballpark is fine. It decides your marginal rate, the rate your bonus is really taxed at. Enter only your own pay, even on a joint return: only if you file jointly does a later question ask what the two of you earn between you.

How do you file your tax return?

Married filing jointly only, leave it blank otherwise. Leave it empty and we treat the pay you already entered as everything the household earns.

Why one return for two people needs both incomes

When you and your husband or wife send in one return together, both incomes are taxed as one, so the rate your bonus really lands in depends on the pair of you and not on your own pay alone. Social Security and Medicare are still worked out on your own pay whatever you put here, because those are charged per person. If you enter less than the pay you already gave us, we use that pay instead, since a household cannot earn less than one of the people in it.

How was this bonus paid to you?

Your final tax in Mississippi is the same either way — only the amount held back now changes

On its own it is normally held back at a flat 22% federally. Inside a paycheck it is held back as if you earned that much every payday, which usually takes more.

Leave this at 0 unless your bonuses pass $1,000,000 in one year

Do not count the bonus you entered at the start. Past $1,000,000 of bonuses in one year the federal share jumps from 22% to 37%.

Why my Mississippi payslip says something a little different

Withholding is what your employer sends in now; your real tax is settled when you file. City and county taxes and state programs are not modelled. See our terms.

Your Mississippi bonus is ordinary income; the payday deduction is a flat withholding prepayment, not a higher rate. Mississippi has no separate bonus rate, so it withholds using the aggregate method on top of the 22% federal prepayment and FICA. Type in your salary and bonus above and the tool lines up today's withholding against your true tax, with the refund or balance due. Everything runs in your browser.

Short version: in Mississippi, a bonus paid on its own is withheld at the flat federal 22%, no separate Mississippi rate — it's withheld as ordinary wages, and 7.65% FICA. None of that is the final number — a bonus is taxed at your marginal rate once you file, so the calculator above estimates what comes back or is still due.

Bonus withholding in Mississippi next to Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee

Take a $10,000 bonus for someone on $70,000 and compare Mississippi with bordering Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee:

StateBonus methodState withheldTotal withheld
Mississippiaggregate method$400$3,365
Louisianaaggregate (~3%)$300$3,265
Alabamaflat 5%$500$3,465
Tennesseeno state income tax$0$2,965

Total combines the 22% federal, the state line, and FICA. Single-filer estimates — your real income tax settles when you file.

Mississippi bonus withholding across three bonus sizes

For a single filer on a $70,000 salary, here's the Mississippi withholding at three bonus amounts:

BonusFederalMississippiFICATotal% of bonus
$5,000$1,100$200$383$1,68333.7%
$25,000$5,500$1,000$1,913$8,41333.7%
$100,000$22,000$4,000$7,650$33,65033.7%

The share changes because Social Security ends at the wage base; the income tax reconciles on your return either way.

Worked example: a $18,000 Mississippi bonus at a $215,000 salary

Say you earn $215,000 in Mississippi and your employer cuts a separate $18,000 bonus check:

  • Off the top: $5,103 disappears at payday — $3,960 federal, $720 Mississippi, and $423 FICA — so roughly $12,897 actually reaches you, a 28.3% cut.
  • What it actually costs: the true income tax on the bonus is about $6,250 (federal $5,530 + Mississippi $720), plus the same $423 FICA.
  • The gap: you'll owe about $1,570 more at filing, because your real rate beats the 22% withheld. FICA ($423) stays either way — it's a real tax.

Illustrative single-filer figures from this page's engine; your result depends on your total income and filing status.

The three cuts on a Mississippi bonus: federal, state, and FICA

Federal: a flat 22% prepayment. Paid on its own check, a bonus has federal income tax withheld at a flat 22% (IRS Publication 15). Only the part of your yearly bonuses above $1,000,000 is withheld at 37%; everything under that stays a flat 22% — a shortcut, not a rate reserved for bonuses.

Mississippi folds the bonus into regular pay. Lacking a flat supplemental rate, Mississippi uses the aggregate method: withholding is figured on your wages plus the bonus. Mississippi's income tax is graduated across two Mississippi brackets topping out at 4%, so an aggregated bonus is withheld somewhere along that schedule.

FICA: withheld and owed. Social Security and Medicare take 7.65% of the bonus — a true tax, not a prepayment. The income-tax withholding is the only part that can come back — the FICA share is settled the moment it's taken.

Why your Mississippi bonus looks over-taxed — and mostly isn't

"Bonus tax" is a nickname for over-withholding. The 22% is a flat prepayment; your bonus is ordinary income taxed at your marginal rate once the year's brackets are applied. If your real rate sits under 22%, the surplus refunds; if it runs above, you cover the shortfall. In this page's $18,000 example, withholding falls about $1,570 short of the real tax, so you'd owe the rest. Just the 7.65% FICA slice is a real tax you won't get back.

Mississippi bonus tax FAQ

Does Mississippi have a separate bonus withholding rate?

No. Mississippi has no separate supplemental rate, so a bonus is withheld with the aggregate method — as if it were part of your regular wages.

Will I get some of my Mississippi bonus withholding back?

Often, yes — if your true marginal rate is below the 22% withheld, the difference refunds at filing; above 22%, you owe it. FICA is a true tax and never refunds.

Are bonuses taxed at a higher rate in Mississippi?

No. A bonus is ordinary income taxed at your normal marginal rate when you file; the flat 22% withheld is a prepayment, not a tax rate.

What is the Mississippi bonus tax rate in 2026?

Mississippi withholds the aggregate method on a separately paid bonus, on top of the flat 22% federal rate (37% above $1,000,000/yr) and 7.65% FICA. That's withholding, not your final tax.
