Louisiana bonus tax calculator

Your normal salary or wages for the year, before tax

A ballpark is fine. It decides your marginal rate, the rate your bonus is really taxed at. Enter only your own pay, even on a joint return: only if you file jointly does a later question ask what the two of you earn between you.

How do you file your tax return?

Married filing jointly only, leave it blank otherwise. Leave it empty and we treat the pay you already entered as everything the household earns.

Why one return for two people needs both incomes

When you and your husband or wife send in one return together, both incomes are taxed as one, so the rate your bonus really lands in depends on the pair of you and not on your own pay alone. Social Security and Medicare are still worked out on your own pay whatever you put here, because those are charged per person. If you enter less than the pay you already gave us, we use that pay instead, since a household cannot earn less than one of the people in it.

How was this bonus paid to you?

Your final tax in Louisiana is the same either way — only the amount held back now changes

On its own it is normally held back at a flat 22% federally. Inside a paycheck it is held back as if you earned that much every payday, which usually takes more.

Leave this at 0 unless your bonuses pass $1,000,000 in one year

Do not count the bonus you entered at the start. Past $1,000,000 of bonuses in one year the federal share jumps from 22% to 37%.

Why my Louisiana payslip says something a little different

Withholding is what your employer sends in now; your real tax is settled when you file. City and county taxes and state programs are not modelled. See our terms.

A Louisiana bonus feels heavily taxed, but the missing chunk is withholding, not a bonus tax. Louisiana has no separate bonus rate, so it withholds using the aggregate method (about 3%) on top of the 22% federal prepayment and FICA. Run your numbers to see the "now" withholding next to the "at tax time" total, and how much comes back or is still owed. Everything runs in your browser.

Short version: in Louisiana, a bonus paid on its own is withheld at the flat federal 22%, no separate Louisiana rate — it's withheld as ordinary wages (about 3%), and 7.65% FICA. Treat it as money on account. The real tax is your marginal rate, reconciled on your return; the tool above shows the gap either way.

Louisiana bonus withholding at $5,000, $25,000 and $100,000

Withholding on a $5,000, $25,000, and $100,000 bonus in Louisiana for a single filer earning $70,000:

BonusFederalLouisianaFICATotal% of bonus
$5,000$1,100$150$383$1,63332.6%
$25,000$5,500$750$1,913$8,16332.6%
$100,000$22,000$3,000$7,650$32,65032.6%

The % shifts as Social Security stops at the wage base; the income-tax portion still trues up when you file.

The three cuts on a Louisiana bonus: federal, state, and FICA

How the federal 22% works. A bonus identified separately from regular wages is withheld at a flat 22% federally (IRS Publication 15). It rises to a mandatory 37% on any bonus dollars past $1,000,000 in a year — the third bracket's rate as a default, not a bonus tax.

Louisiana: no separate bonus rate. With no published supplemental rate, Louisiana withholds a bonus using the aggregate method — combined with your regular pay. Its flat 3% income tax means a separately paid bonus is withheld close to 3%.

Don't expect FICA back. Of the total held back, 7.65% is FICA — Social Security to the wage base, plus Medicare — owed at that rate. That's why the calculator shows the same FICA under "withheld now" and "what it really costs" — there's nothing to refund; only the income-tax portion trues up.

The "Louisiana bonus tax" myth, and what's really withheld

There is no special bonus tax rate. The 22% is a withholding convenience; at filing the bonus is taxed like the rest of your income, at your marginal rate across the brackets. Under 22% (most people) the extra comes back as a refund; over 22% you owe the difference. In this page's $9,000 example, withholding falls about $670 short of the real tax, so you'd owe the rest. Only FICA (7.65%) is a true tax that never returns.

What a $9,000 bonus really costs on a $215,000 Louisiana income

Here's how a $9,000 bonus plays out for a single filer making $215,000 in Louisiana:

  • Withheld now: $1,980 federal (22%) + $270 Louisiana + $211 FICA = $2,462 held back, leaving about $6,539 in hand — a 27.4% bite.
  • The real bill: at filing the bonus is taxed roughly $2,920 in income tax (federal $2,650 + Louisiana $270), with the identical $211 FICA on top.
  • The gap: the 22% withheld falls short of your real rate, leaving about $670 to owe at filing. FICA ($211) stays either way — it's a real tax.

Louisiana and Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas: a bonus-withholding comparison

Louisiana bonus tax FAQ

Does Louisiana have a separate bonus withholding rate?

No. Louisiana has no separate supplemental rate, so a bonus is withheld with the aggregate method — as if it were part of your regular wages, effectively near 3%.

Is there a special bonus tax rate in Louisiana?

No. The 22% federal and the state supplemental rate are withholding defaults, not rates that apply only to bonuses. Your real tax is your ordinary marginal rate.

What rate does Louisiana withhold on a bonus in 2026?

Louisiana's supplemental withholding is about 3% (aggregate method), added to the flat 22% federal prepayment (37% on bonus pay over $1,000,000/yr) and 7.65% FICA. Only the income-tax portion is a prepayment; it trues up at your real rate.

Does my Louisiana bonus ever come back at tax time?

The income-tax part can. If the flat 22% over-withheld relative to your real marginal rate, the excess is refunded; if you're a high earner above 22%, you pay more. FICA is never refunded.
