Hawaii's twelve-bracket ladder (1.4%–11%): what comes out of each 2026 check
Hawaii taxes income on a graduated state schedule for 2026, applied after the state deduction for your filing status. This calculator applies that on top of federal withholding and Social Security / Medicare to estimate your Hawaii take-home pay.
Hawaii uses a graduated income tax with 12 brackets for 2026, with marginal rates ranging from 1.4% to a top rate of 11% (which applies to single-filer taxable income above $325,000). For 2026, Hawaii's state standard deduction plus personal exemption is $9,144 for single filers and $18,288 for married couples filing jointly. As a worked example, a single filer earning $60,000 pays about $2,756 in Hawaii income tax (roughly 4.6% of gross) before federal tax and FICA.
What this estimate doesn't include: This estimate includes Hawaii's $1,144 personal exemption, added to the standard deduction: one for a single or head-of-household filer and two for a married couple filing jointly. The exemption for each dependent, the extra exemption for filers 65 or older, itemized deductions, and tax credits (the refundable food/excise tax credit, state EITC, and child & dependent care credit) are not modeled, so actual tax for many filers is lower than shown. Hawaii's standard deduction rose for 2026 under Act 46 to $8,000 single / $16,000 married / $12,000 head of household; the 12-bracket rate schedule is unchanged from 2025. Hawaii has no local or county income tax on wages. City, county or school-district income taxes where they apply, court-ordered deductions, union dues, and anything else your specific employer withholds are not in this figure; your pay stub is the authority on those.

Temporary Disability Insurance: what else Hawaii takes from your check
Beyond income tax, Hawaii withholds these state payroll programs directly from employee wages:
| Program | Employee rate (2026) | Wage base / cap |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) - employee contribution | Up to 0.5% of the employee's weekly wages (employer may withhold one-half of the premium cost, capped at 0.5% of weekly wages) | Maximum weekly taxable wage base of $1,500.21 for 2026; maximum weekly employee deduction $7.50. Max weekly TDI benefit is $871 (58% of average weekly wage). |
Included in your take-home: the HI TDI contribution is subtracted from the take-home estimate at the top of this page. These are withheld after tax and do not lower your taxable income.
Your paycheck vs the $100,700 Hawaii median
| Median household income (2024 (ACS 1-year)) | $100,700 |
| Take-home (single filer) | ≈$73,433 |
Hawaii's own $16.00 minimum wage — above the federal floor (2026)
$16.00/hour (≈$33,280/year full-time). Effective Jan 1, 2026 (up from $14.00). Scheduled to rise to $18.00 on Jan 1, 2028. Tip credit allowed up to $1.50/hr if combined tips+wage meets a threshold.
Two Hawaii payroll quirks worth knowing
- Hawaii taxes income in 12 brackets for 2026, from 1.40% to 11.00%, and the rates climb fast: a single filer's taxable income above $48,000 is already taxed at 7.60%. The top 11.00% rate starts above $325,000 for a single filer ($650,000 for a married couple filing jointly).
- Hawaii's TDI is the only mandatory employee-side payroll deduction in the state and is tiny in absolute terms: capped at 0.5% of weekly wages with a maximum deduction of just $7.50 per week (on a $1,500.21 weekly wage base) for 2026 - there is no state PFML/SDI beyond TDI.
Is overtime and tips tax-free in Hawaii? Federally yes; Hawaii's state treatment is mixed
For tax years 2025 to 2028 there is a federal deduction for qualified overtime premium pay and tips (OBBBA caps & rules). FICA comes out either way.
Hawaii state income tax: Act 35 (2026) brings Hawaii in line with the federal tips deduction from tax year 2026, so qualified tips come off your Hawaii taxable income too. Hawaii did not adopt the federal overtime deduction, so overtime premium pay is still taxed by Hawaii. (source: files.hawaii.gov)
- Overtime: 2025 — not deductible on your Hawaii return (still state-taxed); 2026–2028 — not deductible on your Hawaii return (still state-taxed).
- Tips: 2025 — not deductible on your Hawaii return (still state-taxed); 2026–2028 — deductible on your Hawaii return too.

No city or county income tax anywhere in Hawaii
No local, county, or city income taxes. Only the state levies income tax, in 12 graduated brackets from 1.40% to 11.00% for 2026. Hawaii's 'sales tax' is technically the General Excise Tax (GET) on business gross receipts, not a true retail sales tax.
