Hawaii bonus tax calculator

Your normal salary or wages for the year, before tax

A ballpark is fine. It decides your marginal rate, the rate your bonus is really taxed at. Enter only your own pay, even on a joint return: only if you file jointly does a later question ask what the two of you earn between you.

How do you file your tax return?

Married filing jointly only, leave it blank otherwise. Leave it empty and we treat the pay you already entered as everything the household earns.

Why one return for two people needs both incomes

When you and your husband or wife send in one return together, both incomes are taxed as one, so the rate your bonus really lands in depends on the pair of you and not on your own pay alone. Social Security and Medicare are still worked out on your own pay whatever you put here, because those are charged per person. If you enter less than the pay you already gave us, we use that pay instead, since a household cannot earn less than one of the people in it.

How was this bonus paid to you?

Your final tax in Hawaii is the same either way — only the amount held back now changes

On its own it is normally held back at a flat 22% federally. Inside a paycheck it is held back as if you earned that much every payday, which usually takes more.

Leave this at 0 unless your bonuses pass $1,000,000 in one year

Do not count the bonus you entered at the start. Past $1,000,000 of bonuses in one year the federal share jumps from 22% to 37%.

Why my Hawaii payslip says something a little different

Withholding is what your employer sends in now; your real tax is settled when you file. City and county taxes and state programs are not modelled. See our terms.

A Hawaii bonus feels heavily taxed, but the missing chunk is withholding, not a bonus tax. Hawaii has no separate bonus rate, so it withholds using the aggregate method on top of the 22% federal prepayment and FICA. Hawaii also withholds disability insurance contributions from wages, which this estimate does not model. Enter your numbers to see what's held back now beside what the bonus will really cost when you file, and your refund or amount owed. Everything runs in your browser.

The quick take: a stand-alone Hawaii bonus has a flat 22% federal tax withheld, no separate Hawaii rate — it's withheld as ordinary wages, plus 7.65% FICA. Treat it as money on account. The real tax is your marginal rate, reconciled on your return; the tool above shows the gap either way. Hawaii also withholds disability insurance contributions from wages, which this estimate does not model.

Cross-border check: Hawaii vs. California, Washington and Alaska on a bonus

The same $10,000 bonus and $70,000 salary, in Hawaii and its neighbors California, Washington and Alaska:

StateBonus methodState withheldTotal withheld
Hawaiiaggregate method$760$3,725
California10.23% / 6.6%$1,023$3,988
Washingtonno state income tax$0$2,965
Alaskano state income tax$0$2,965

Totals stack federal 22%, state, and FICA for a single filer — the actual income tax lands when the return is filed.

How a Hawaii bonus is withheld: 22% federal + the aggregate method

How the federal 22% works. A bonus identified separately from regular wages is withheld at a flat 22% federally (IRS Publication 15). A mandatory 37% hits supplemental pay beyond $1,000,000 a year; neither figure is a special "bonus" rate, both are withholding defaults.

Hawaii: the aggregate method. Hawaii publishes no separate bonus rate, so a bonus is withheld as if it were ordinary wages. Hawaii's income tax is graduated across twelve Hawaii brackets topping out at 11%, so an aggregated bonus is withheld somewhere along that schedule. Hawaii also withholds disability insurance contributions from wages, which this estimate does not model. The published rate does not say whether a separately paid bonus carries it, so your pay stub is the authority there.

The 7.65% FICA slice doesn't true up. Social Security and Medicare are genuine taxes on a bonus, not a prepayment. So FICA reads identically in both columns of the calculator; only the income-tax withholding settles up at filing.

A $14,000 bonus on a $215,000 Hawaii salary: withheld vs. actually owed

Say you earn $215,000 in Hawaii and your employer cuts a separate $14,000 bonus check:

  • On the check: the employer holds back $3,080 for federal, $1,155 Hawaii, and $329 for FICA — $4,564 in all (32.6% of the bonus), leaving about $9,436.
  • What it actually costs: the true income tax on the bonus is about $5,405 (federal $4,250 + Hawaii $1,155), plus the same $329 FICA.
  • The gap: the 22% withheld falls short of your real rate, leaving about $1,170 to owe at filing. FICA ($329) stays either way — it's a real tax.

A single-filer illustration only — drop your real salary, bonus, and filing status into the tool above for your figure.

The "Hawaii bonus tax" myth, and what's really withheld

A bonus doesn't trigger a different tax — just a flat withholding up front. When you file, it's folded into your income and taxed at your marginal rate through the normal brackets. Below a 22% real rate you get money back; above it, you settle the gap at filing. For the $14,000 bonus below, the flat withholding runs roughly $1,170 light, leaving that to owe. Only FICA (7.65%) is a true tax that never returns.

Three bonus sizes in Hawaii: $5,000, $25,000 and $100,000 withheld

Three bonuses — $5,000, $25,000, $100,000 — and what Hawaii withholds from each on a $70,000 salary:

BonusFederalHawaiiFICATotal% of bonus
$5,000$1,100$380$383$1,86337.3%
$25,000$5,500$1,900$1,913$9,31337.3%
$100,000$22,000$7,711$7,650$37,36137.4%

That percentage moves once Social Security caps out at the wage base, and the income-tax slice still settles at filing.

Hawaii bonus tax FAQ

Does Hawaii tax bonuses more than regular pay?

No. There's no separate, higher tax on bonuses — a bonus is just withheld at a flat rate up front, then taxed like any income at your marginal rate.

Do I get a refund on my Hawaii bonus?

If 22% was more than your real rate, yes — the over-withheld income tax returns at filing. If your marginal rate tops 22%, you owe the shortfall. FICA doesn't come back either way.

What is the Hawaii bonus tax rate in 2026?

Hawaii withholds the aggregate method on a separately paid bonus, on top of the flat 22% federal rate (37% above $1,000,000/yr) and 7.65% FICA. That's withholding, not your final tax. Hawaii also withholds disability insurance contributions from wages, which this estimate does not model.

Does Hawaii have a separate bonus withholding rate?

No. Hawaii has no separate supplemental rate, so a bonus is withheld with the aggregate method — as if it were part of your regular wages.
