California take-home pay calculator

This is the figure before tax, not the amount that lands in your account

Your pay stub calls it gross pay. It is what you are paid before federal and California income tax, Social Security, Medicare and disability insurance come out of it.

Your usual week, not a busy one

Use the hours you work most weeks. Overtime belongs in the overtime calculator instead.

How often are you paid?

It changes the size of each check, not the tax you owe for the year

It only decides how the year is cut up, so the figure you see is the one you would actually receive.

How do you do your taxes?

It moves the income bands, so it changes the tax on the same pay

Tax forms call this your filing status. This estimate assumes one income; if your husband or wife also earns, the real figure is higher than this.

Do customers tip you?

Cash and card tips together, for the whole year.

An hourly rate times your hours never includes tips

If you worked out your pay as a rate times the hours you work, that figure is your wages and nothing else, so your tips are on top of it. A yearly salary from an employer who reports your tips usually already has them in it, and your last payslip is the place to check: if the gross on it is bigger than your rate times your hours, the difference is your reported tips.

Do you get paid extra for working extra hours?

This starts at one and a half times your normal rate, the usual overtime rate. Change it if yours is different, and it stops following.

Do you get a bonus or commission?

Do you, or your husband or wife, turn 65 at any point this year?

Do you put part of your pay into a retirement plan at work?

Look on your pay stub for a line like 401(k), 403(b), 457, TSP, retirement or pension.

Does money come out of your pay for health insurance or a health account?

Look on your pay stub for lines like medical, dental, vision, HSA or FSA.

Do you claim any children or other dependents?

That is $0 of dependent credit for the year. A W-4 counts $2,000 for each child under 17 and $500 for each other dependent.

Did you ask your employer to take extra tax out of each paycheck?

Look on your pay stub for a line like additional or extra withholding. On the W-4 you handed in, it is the box on line 4(c).

If your W-4 shows a per-paycheck amount, multiply it by the number of paychecks you get in a year.

Is anything else taken out of your pay after tax?

Look near the bottom of your pay stub for lines like union dues, life insurance, a repayment or a garnishment.

California's nine-bracket ladder (1%–12.3%): what comes out of each 2026 check

Your California state income tax for 2026 is figured on a graduated bracket schedule, layered on after the state deduction. This calculator applies that on top of federal withholding and Social Security / Medicare to estimate your California take-home pay.

California uses a graduated income tax with 9 brackets for 2026, with marginal rates ranging from 1% to a top rate of 12.3% (which applies to single-filer taxable income above $742,953). For 2026, California's state standard deduction is $5,706 for single filers and $11,412 for married couples filing jointly. As a worked example, a single filer earning $60,000 pays about $1,793 in California income tax (roughly 3.0% of gross) before federal tax and FICA.

What this estimate doesn't include: Showing 2025 California rates. The FTB has not published 2026 brackets yet, and we update this page once it does. California directs 2026 filers to use the 2025 tax tables. The California 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax (formerly Mental Health Services Act) surcharge on taxable income over $1,000,000 — which raises the top effective rate to 13.3% — is NOT modeled here. California's personal exemption credits, dependent credits, and itemized deductions are not modeled. City, county or school-district income taxes where they apply, court-ordered deductions, union dues, and anything else your specific employer withholds are not in this figure; your pay stub is the authority on those.

State Disability Insurance: what else California takes from your check

California runs employee-funded payroll programs that come off your check on top of income tax and FICA:

ProgramEmployee rate (2026)Wage base / cap
State Disability Insurance (SDI, includes PFL)1.3% of all wagesNo wage cap — SB 951 eliminated the taxable wage ceiling effective Jan 1, 2024, so SDI applies to all wages

Included in your take-home: the CA SDI contribution is subtracted from the take-home estimate at the top of this page. These are withheld after tax and do not lower your taxable income.

No city or county income tax anywhere in California

No California city or county levies a personal income tax — state law gives the Franchise Tax Board exclusive authority over personal income tax. San Francisco's Gross Receipts Tax is a business tax, not a wage tax, and does not affect W-2 take-home pay.

Your paycheck vs the $102,900 California median

Median household income (2024 (ACS 1-Year))$102,900
Take-home (single filer)≈$74,405

Two California payroll quirks worth knowing

  • California SDI has no wage cap as of 2026: the 1.3% employee contribution applies to every dollar of wages (SB 951 removed the taxable-wage ceiling in 2024), so high earners see SDI withheld all year — unlike capped programs in other states.
  • California's top income tax rate is 13.3% (the highest state rate in the U.S.), and combined with the uncapped 1.3% SDI it reaches an effective ~14.6% top marginal rate on wage income.

Is overtime and tips tax-free in California? Federally yes, but California still taxes both

Federal law lets you deduct qualified tips and overtime premium pay from 2025 through 2028 (OBBBA caps & rules), though Social Security and Medicare are still withheld.
