Oklahoma bonus tax calculator

Your normal salary or wages for the year, before tax

A ballpark is fine. It decides your marginal rate, the rate your bonus is really taxed at. Enter only your own pay, even on a joint return: only if you file jointly does a later question ask what the two of you earn between you.

How do you file your tax return?

Married filing jointly only, leave it blank otherwise. Leave it empty and we treat the pay you already entered as everything the household earns.

Why one return for two people needs both incomes

When you and your husband or wife send in one return together, both incomes are taxed as one, so the rate your bonus really lands in depends on the pair of you and not on your own pay alone. Social Security and Medicare are still worked out on your own pay whatever you put here, because those are charged per person. If you enter less than the pay you already gave us, we use that pay instead, since a household cannot earn less than one of the people in it.

How was this bonus paid to you?

Your final tax in Oklahoma is the same either way — only the amount held back now changes

On its own it is normally held back at a flat 22% federally. Inside a paycheck it is held back as if you earned that much every payday, which usually takes more.

Leave this at 0 unless your bonuses pass $1,000,000 in one year

Do not count the bonus you entered at the start. Past $1,000,000 of bonuses in one year the federal share jumps from 22% to 37%.

Why my Oklahoma payslip says something a little different

Withholding is what your employer sends in now; your real tax is settled when you file. City and county taxes and state programs are not modelled. See our terms.

A Oklahoma bonus feels heavily taxed, but the missing chunk is withholding, not a bonus tax. Oklahoma adds a flat 4.5% on top of the 22% federal prepayment and FICA. Put in your figures above to compare what's withheld now with your real tax at filing — and the refund or shortfall. Everything runs in your browser.

Short version: in Oklahoma, a bonus paid on its own is withheld at the flat federal 22%, 4.5% for Oklahoma, and 7.65% FICA. None of that is the final number — a bonus is taxed at your marginal rate once you file, so the calculator above estimates what comes back or is still due.

Three bonus sizes in Oklahoma: $5,000, $25,000 and $100,000 withheld

Withholding on a $5,000, $25,000, and $100,000 bonus in Oklahoma for a single filer earning $70,000:

BonusFederalOklahomaFICATotal% of bonus
$5,000$1,100$225$383$1,70834.2%
$25,000$5,500$1,125$1,913$8,53834.2%
$100,000$22,000$4,500$7,650$34,15034.2%

The share changes because Social Security ends at the wage base; the income tax reconciles on your return either way.

$115,000 salary, $24,000 bonus: the Oklahoma withholding-vs.-tax breakdown

Say you earn $115,000 in Oklahoma and your employer cuts a separate $24,000 bonus check:

  • Off the top: $8,196 disappears at payday — $5,280 federal, $1,080 Oklahoma, and $1,836 FICA — so roughly $15,804 actually reaches you, a 34.2% cut.
  • What it actually costs: the true income tax on the bonus is about $6,704 (federal $5,624 + Oklahoma $1,080), plus the same $1,836 FICA.
  • The gap: the 22% withheld falls short of your real rate, leaving about $344 to owe at filing. FICA ($1,836) stays either way — it's a real tax.

Oklahoma bonus withholding, piece by piece

Where the 22% comes from. Employers may withhold a flat 22% of a separately identified bonus for federal income tax (IRS Publication 15). A mandatory 37% hits supplemental pay beyond $1,000,000 a year; neither figure is a special "bonus" rate, both are withholding defaults.

Oklahoma's 4.5% supplemental rate. When a bonus is paid on its own, Oklahoma Tax Commission Packet OW-2 sets a flat 4.5% of it for Oklahoma withholding.

The 7.65% is real. FICA — Social Security up to the wage base, plus 1.45% Medicare (and 0.9% more above $200,000) — is owed at exactly the rate it's withheld. Neither piece refunds at filing, so both columns of the tool show it unchanged; the income-tax withholding is the only part that trues up.

Oklahoma vs. Texas, Kansas and Arkansas: bonus withholding compared

A single filer earning $70,000 who gets a $10,000 bonus, in Oklahoma and neighboring Texas, Kansas and Arkansas:

StateBonus methodState withheldTotal withheld
Oklahomaflat 4.5%$450$3,415
Texasno state income tax$0$2,965
Kansasflat 5%$500$3,465
Arkansasflat 3.7%$370$3,335

Total combines the 22% federal, the state line, and FICA. Single-filer estimates — your real income tax settles when you file.

Why your Oklahoma bonus looks over-taxed — and mostly isn't

The 22% you see isn't a bonus levy; it's a withholding placeholder. Your bonus is ordinary income, and its real tax is whatever your marginal rate works out to across the brackets. Below a 22% real rate you get money back; above it, you settle the gap at filing. Worked out here on a $24,000 bonus, you'd still owe about $344 when you file. Set aside the 7.65% FICA — that part is owed for good and never refunds.

Oklahoma bonus tax FAQ

Does a bonus push my Oklahoma income into a higher bracket?

No. Brackets are marginal — only the dollars above each threshold are taxed higher. A bonus never re-taxes income you already earned.

Does my Oklahoma bonus ever come back at tax time?

The income-tax part can. If the flat 22% over-withheld relative to your real marginal rate, the excess is refunded; if you're a high earner above 22%, you pay more. FICA is never refunded.

Is there a special bonus tax rate in Oklahoma?

No. The 22% federal and the state supplemental rate are withholding defaults, not rates that apply only to bonuses. Your real tax is your ordinary marginal rate.

How much is withheld from a bonus in Oklahoma for 2026?

On a separately paid bonus, Oklahoma takes 4.5%, the federal side takes a flat 22% (37% beyond $1,000,000/yr), and FICA takes 7.65%. Those are withholding rates that settle up when you file — not a final tax.
