North Dakota bonus tax calculator

Your normal salary or wages for the year, before tax

A ballpark is fine. It decides your marginal rate, the rate your bonus is really taxed at. Enter only your own pay, even on a joint return: only if you file jointly does a later question ask what the two of you earn between you.

How do you file your tax return?

Married filing jointly only, leave it blank otherwise. Leave it empty and we treat the pay you already entered as everything the household earns.

Why one return for two people needs both incomes

When you and your husband or wife send in one return together, both incomes are taxed as one, so the rate your bonus really lands in depends on the pair of you and not on your own pay alone. Social Security and Medicare are still worked out on your own pay whatever you put here, because those are charged per person. If you enter less than the pay you already gave us, we use that pay instead, since a household cannot earn less than one of the people in it.

How was this bonus paid to you?

Your final tax in North Dakota is the same either way — only the amount held back now changes

On its own it is normally held back at a flat 22% federally. Inside a paycheck it is held back as if you earned that much every payday, which usually takes more.

Leave this at 0 unless your bonuses pass $1,000,000 in one year

Do not count the bonus you entered at the start. Past $1,000,000 of bonuses in one year the federal share jumps from 22% to 37%.

Why my North Dakota payslip says something a little different

Withholding is what your employer sends in now; your real tax is settled when you file. City and county taxes and state programs are not modelled. See our terms.

A North Dakota bonus feels heavily taxed, but the missing chunk is withholding, not a bonus tax. North Dakota adds a flat 1.5% on top of the 22% federal prepayment and FICA. Type in your salary and bonus above and the tool lines up today's withholding against your true tax, with the refund or balance due. Everything runs in your browser.

Short version: in North Dakota, a bonus paid on its own is withheld at the flat federal 22%, 1.5% for North Dakota, and 7.65% FICA. But that's only withholding. Your real bill is your marginal rate at filing; run the calculator to see the refund or shortfall.

The "North Dakota bonus tax" myth, and what's really withheld

The 22% you see isn't a bonus levy; it's a withholding placeholder. Your bonus is ordinary income, and its real tax is whatever your marginal rate works out to across the brackets. Below a 22% real rate you get money back; above it, you settle the gap at filing. Worked out for the $18,000 bonus here, about $2,070 returns as a refund. Only FICA (7.65%) is a true tax that never returns.

North Dakota bonus withholding across three bonus sizes

Three bonuses — $5,000, $25,000, $100,000 — and what North Dakota withholds from each on a $70,000 salary:

BonusFederalNorth DakotaFICATotal% of bonus
$5,000$1,100$75$383$1,55831.1%
$25,000$5,500$375$1,913$7,78831.1%
$100,000$22,000$1,500$7,650$31,15031.1%

That percentage moves once Social Security caps out at the wage base, and the income-tax slice still settles at filing.

$36,000 salary, $18,000 bonus: the North Dakota withholding-vs.-tax breakdown

Picture a North Dakota worker on a $36,000 salary handed a $18,000 bonus, paid on its own:

  • Off the top: $5,607 disappears at payday — $3,960 federal, $270 North Dakota, and $1,377 FICA — so roughly $12,393 actually reaches you, a 31.1% cut.
  • The real bill: at filing the bonus is taxed roughly $2,160 in income tax (federal $2,160 + North Dakota $0), with the identical $1,377 FICA on top.
  • The gap: the flat 22% over-shoots your real rate by about $2,070, so that much is a refund later. FICA ($1,377) stays either way — it's a real tax.

What comes out of a North Dakota bonus in 2026

Federal withholding on a bonus. The IRS default holds back a flat 22% for federal income tax when the bonus is separate from your regular pay (IRS Pub 15). Once your year's supplemental pay tops $1,000,000, the rate jumps to 37%. It borrows the third bracket's rate — it is not a levy on bonuses.

North Dakota withholds 1.5% flat. On a stand-alone bonus, North Dakota takes a straight 1.5% for state income tax (North Dakota DOR 2026 income tax withholding booklet).

FICA: withheld and owed. Social Security and Medicare take 7.65% of the bonus — a true tax, not a prepayment. It reads the same in the "now" and "at tax time" columns because none of it comes back — just the income-tax slice is a prepayment that reconciles.

North Dakota bonus tax FAQ

How much is withheld from a bonus in North Dakota for 2026?

On a separately paid bonus, North Dakota takes 1.5%, the federal side takes a flat 22% (37% beyond $1,000,000/yr), and FICA takes 7.65%. Those are withholding rates that settle up when you file — not a final tax.

Does a bonus push my North Dakota income into a higher bracket?

No. Brackets are marginal — only the dollars above each threshold are taxed higher. A bonus never re-taxes income you already earned.

Does my North Dakota bonus ever come back at tax time?

The income-tax part can. If the flat 22% over-withheld relative to your real marginal rate, the excess is refunded; if you're a high earner above 22%, you pay more. FICA is never refunded.

Is a North Dakota bonus taxed differently from my salary?

Not in the end. It may be withheld differently (a flat rate up front), but at filing a bonus is taxed exactly like the rest of your income, at your marginal rate.
