New Mexico bonus tax calculator

Your normal salary or wages for the year, before tax

A ballpark is fine. It decides your marginal rate, the rate your bonus is really taxed at. Enter only your own pay, even on a joint return: only if you file jointly does a later question ask what the two of you earn between you.

How do you file your tax return?

Married filing jointly only, leave it blank otherwise. Leave it empty and we treat the pay you already entered as everything the household earns.

Why one return for two people needs both incomes

When you and your husband or wife send in one return together, both incomes are taxed as one, so the rate your bonus really lands in depends on the pair of you and not on your own pay alone. Social Security and Medicare are still worked out on your own pay whatever you put here, because those are charged per person. If you enter less than the pay you already gave us, we use that pay instead, since a household cannot earn less than one of the people in it.

How was this bonus paid to you?

Your final tax in New Mexico is the same either way — only the amount held back now changes

On its own it is normally held back at a flat 22% federally. Inside a paycheck it is held back as if you earned that much every payday, which usually takes more.

Leave this at 0 unless your bonuses pass $1,000,000 in one year

Do not count the bonus you entered at the start. Past $1,000,000 of bonuses in one year the federal share jumps from 22% to 37%.

Why my New Mexico payslip says something a little different

Withholding is what your employer sends in now; your real tax is settled when you file. City and county taxes and state programs are not modelled. See our terms.

In New Mexico, a bonus is ordinary income — the slice that vanishes on payday is withholding, not a higher tax rate. New Mexico adds a flat 5.9% on top of the 22% federal prepayment and FICA. Type in your salary and bonus above and the tool lines up today's withholding against your true tax, with the refund or balance due. Everything runs in your browser.

Short version: in New Mexico, a bonus paid on its own is withheld at the flat federal 22%, 5.9% for New Mexico, and 7.65% FICA. Those are withholding rates, not the tax itself; your bonus settles at your marginal rate on your return — the tool above shows by how much.

How a New Mexico bonus is withheld: 22% federal + a flat 5.9%

Federal: a flat 22% prepayment. Paid on its own check, a bonus has federal income tax withheld at a flat 22% (IRS Publication 15). Bonus dollars over $1,000,000 in the year switch to a mandatory 37%; below that it's a flat 22% prepayment tied to the third bracket.

New Mexico: flat 5.9%. New Mexico withholds a flat 5.9% of a separately paid bonus for state income tax, per New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department FYI-104.

The 7.65% FICA slice doesn't true up. Social Security and Medicare are genuine taxes on a bonus, not a prepayment. That's why the calculator shows the same FICA under "withheld now" and "what it really costs" — there's nothing to refund; only the income-tax portion trues up.

Cross-border check: New Mexico vs. Texas, Arizona and Colorado on a bonus

The same $10,000 bonus and $70,000 salary, in New Mexico and its neighbors Texas, Arizona and Colorado:

StateBonus methodState withheldTotal withheld
New Mexicoflat 5.9%$590$3,555
Texasno state income tax$0$2,965
Arizonaaggregate (~2.5%)$250$3,215
Coloradoaggregate (~4.4%)$440$3,405

Each total adds the flat federal 22%, the state amount, and FICA; single-filer estimates that true up at filing time.

Three bonus sizes in New Mexico: $5,000, $25,000 and $100,000 withheld

For a single filer on a $70,000 salary, here's the New Mexico withholding at three bonus amounts:

BonusFederalNew MexicoFICATotal% of bonus
$5,000$1,100$295$383$1,77835.5%
$25,000$5,500$1,475$1,913$8,88835.5%
$100,000$22,000$5,900$7,650$35,55035.5%

Watch the percentage fall once Social Security maxes out; the income-tax slice trues up when you file regardless.

What a $11,000 bonus really costs on a $215,000 New Mexico income

Here's how a $11,000 bonus plays out for a single filer making $215,000 in New Mexico:

  • Off the top: $3,328 disappears at payday — $2,420 federal, $649 New Mexico, and $259 FICA — so roughly $7,673 actually reaches you, a 30.3% cut.
  • At tax time: the bonus's actual income tax works out near $3,829 (federal $3,290 + New Mexico $539) — and FICA is the same $259 as before.
  • The gap: you'll owe about $760 more at filing, because your real rate beats the 22% withheld. FICA ($259) stays either way — it's a real tax.

Is New Mexico's a flat 5.9% bonus rate a "bonus tax"? No

Think of the flat rate as a deposit, not a bill. A bonus is taxed like any wages — at your marginal rate when the year's income runs through the brackets — and the 22% is only how it's withheld. Below a 22% real rate you get money back; above it, you settle the gap at filing. In this page's $11,000 example, withholding falls about $760 short of the real tax, so you'd owe the rest. The lone exception is FICA (7.65%), which is a real tax rather than a prepayment.

New Mexico bonus tax FAQ

Are bonuses taxed at a higher rate in New Mexico?

No. A bonus is ordinary income taxed at your normal marginal rate when you file; the flat 22% withheld is a prepayment, not a tax rate.

Does a bonus push my New Mexico income into a higher bracket?

No. Brackets are marginal — only the dollars above each threshold are taxed higher. A bonus never re-taxes income you already earned.

Will I get some of my New Mexico bonus withholding back?

Often, yes — if your true marginal rate is below the 22% withheld, the difference refunds at filing; above 22%, you owe it. FICA is a true tax and never refunds.

What rate does New Mexico withhold on a bonus in 2026?

New Mexico's supplemental withholding is 5.9%, added to the flat 22% federal prepayment (37% on bonus pay over $1,000,000/yr) and 7.65% FICA. Only the income-tax portion is a prepayment; it trues up at your real rate.
